Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 11, 2015

Good afternoon friends of the St. Barnabas Jazz Cabaret,

We have enjoyed success with our St. Barnabas quarterly jazz shows. We are hoping to “grow” the project even more. We will be doing more themed shows and hopefully attract an even larger audience.

We will initiate this effort with a November 11, 2015 program that will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Billy Strayhorn. We will dedicate the entire program to the music of the Billy Strayhorn-Duke Ellington collaboration with great emphasis on Billy’s contributions.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas - November 11, 2015The artists performing this will be Tania Grubbs and her trio. Tania performs in and promotes and coordinates many jazz productions, including those at Andy’s Wine Bar at the Fairmont Hotel, The Mansions on 5th Avenue, and other musical endeavors. This should be an outstanding evening as Tania had worked with the Strayhorn family celebrating Billy’s life and music on other occasions.

As we have said in the past, it is our intent to present jazz as it was in the 40’s and 50’s in jazz clubs in Pittsburgh and throughout the country. In other words, a retro jazz venue with musical artists presenting songs from the Great American Songbook – songs that have a memorable set of lyrics and a melody that was sophisticated, enjoyable, and perhaps romantic We hope to preserve this genre of music and make it accessible to the public.

Through our association with St. Barnabas Health System, we can accomplish the above as well as provide for the financially stressed in our nursing homes. At St. Barnabas we continue to keep these patients and provide them with the same love, care, and safety as all of our patients through the Free Care Fund. This is NOT government funded but funded by individuals, organizations, and programs such as our Jazz Cabaret that contribute to the Free Care Fund.

To date, the Jazz Cabaret has been made possible by some volunteers and the help of very generous sponsors. It is our hope that this generosity continues but we can always use more sponsorship and publicity!

We hope that you will assist us with our endeavors. Please join us in keeping jazz alive while at the same time helping the less fortunate in our nursing homes.
