Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 1, 2017

Good afternoon Jazz Cabaret friends,

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 marks our last Jazz Cabaret for this year. We have planned a 2017 finale that will shine as brightly as the crescent nearly full moon. We have, returning to our stage, the very lovely and gifted songstress, Jessica Lee. She will be accompanied by two equally talented musicians – Mark Strickland on guitar and, from New York city, Chris Hemingway on saxophone. As a trio, they blend their respective dulcet timbre to every song.

Come join us for an evening of great music. Help us keep jazz “alive and well” while also supporting the “Free Care Fund” for patients in the St. Barnabas Nursing Homes.

Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 11, 2015

Good afternoon friends of the St. Barnabas Jazz Cabaret,

You do not have to “hurry – hurry – hurry to catch the A train”. Just get on to Route 8 or 910 and then go to 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, PA 15044. There, perhaps, you will catch a “Satin Doll” or just “Day Dream” as we celebrate Billy Strayhorn’s 100th birthday anniversary. His beautiful music will be presented by Tania Grubbs, with her husband, Jeff, on bass, Daniel May on keyboard, and Tom Wendt on drums – all musicians extraordinaire.

Please join us for an evening of exceptional music written by one of Pittsburgh’s own and performed by exceptional Pittsburgh musicians.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 11, 2015

Good afternoon friends of the St. Barnabas Jazz Cabaret,

We have enjoyed success with our St. Barnabas quarterly jazz shows. We are hoping to “grow” the project even more. We will be doing more themed shows and hopefully attract an even larger audience.

We will initiate this effort with a November 11, 2015 program that will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Billy Strayhorn. We will dedicate the entire program to the music of the Billy Strayhorn-Duke Ellington collaboration with great emphasis on Billy’s contributions.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas - November 11, 2015The artists performing this will be Tania Grubbs and her trio. Tania performs in and promotes and coordinates many jazz productions, including those at Andy’s Wine Bar at the Fairmont Hotel, The Mansions on 5th Avenue, and other musical endeavors. This should be an outstanding evening as Tania had worked with the Strayhorn family celebrating Billy’s life and music on other occasions.

As we have said in the past, it is our intent to present jazz as it was in the 40’s and 50’s in jazz clubs in Pittsburgh and throughout the country. In other words, a retro jazz venue with musical artists presenting songs from the Great American Songbook – songs that have a memorable set of lyrics and a melody that was sophisticated, enjoyable, and perhaps romantic We hope to preserve this genre of music and make it accessible to the public.

Through our association with St. Barnabas Health System, we can accomplish the above as well as provide for the financially stressed in our nursing homes. At St. Barnabas we continue to keep these patients and provide them with the same love, care, and safety as all of our patients through the Free Care Fund. This is NOT government funded but funded by individuals, organizations, and programs such as our Jazz Cabaret that contribute to the Free Care Fund.

To date, the Jazz Cabaret has been made possible by some volunteers and the help of very generous sponsors. It is our hope that this generosity continues but we can always use more sponsorship and publicity!

We hope that you will assist us with our endeavors. Please join us in keeping jazz alive while at the same time helping the less fortunate in our nursing homes.

Time: Wednesday, November 11, 2015 – 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Place: Mt. Vernon Room (Kean Theatre annex),
Washington Place, 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, 15044

Cost: $12.50 per person.
Cash bar, free appetizers and parking

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – July 29, 2015

Hi dear friends of Jazz and those of good will who support the care and well being of the financially stressed at the St. Barnabas Nursing Homes. We are ready to start a new year of quarterly Jazz Cabarets in the Mt. Vernon Room on July 29, 2015.

We had a very successful first year with great jazz artists and were able to contribute four thousand dollars to the “Free Care Fund”.

The new season starts with Maura Minteer and her trio – Jeff Lashway on keyboard, Tony DePaolis on bass, and David Glover on drums. Maura has an extensive background in music, theatre, and television. She is drawn to the songs of the Great American Songbook – popular songs and jazz standards from the 20th century, once performed by Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and Blossom Dearie, among others. Her trio have all appeared in local, regional, and national venues. Jeff and Tony appeared at our Jazz Cabarets last season.

Please join us for a summer evening of live jazz as it was presented in jazz clubs in my generation – cool sounds in a candlelit setting.

When: Wednesday, July 29, 2015
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Place: Mt. Vernon Room (Kean Theatre annex),
Washington Place, 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, 15044
Cost: $12.50 per person.
This includes cash bar, free appetizers and parking.

All ticket proceeds will go the the Free Care Fund at St. Barnabas.

For more information and/or reservations, please contact us at 412-366-1035 or via our website Contact Form.
We presently have several sponsors who will provide our start-up expenses. However if anyone wishes to join us in this philanthropic endeavor, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,
Brooks and Helen Bartlett

Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – April 22, 2015

“GREAT MUSIC – WORTHY CAUSE” – April 22, 2015

“Up Jumps Spring” – a jazz song that Freddie Hubbard wrote seems like a good intro for our April 22, 2015 Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas. We are excited about the marvelous musical artists who will be performing. Chris Laitta, Paul Thompson, and Jeff Lashway present the very best interpretation of songs in the jazz genre. The music is presented in the milieu of a retro jazz club of the 40’s-50’s.

Come and enjoy an evening of jazz and conviviality – AND support the “Free Care Fund” at St. Barnabas.

Date: April 22, 2015

Both have played with the Maynard Ferguson Band and each has recorded many albums with their own groups and other musical greats.

This will be another evening of music in the jazz genre from the “Great American Songbook”.

It is our hope that sponsors will again help us present this quarterly event. If this happens as expected, we will have a new season starting in July 2015. We tentatively have great artists who are anxious to perform. Please join us to show your support of jazz and help us maintain its place in the artistic community. To borrow a phrase from our friend, Tony Mowod, – “Keep a little love in your heart and a taste of jazz in your soul.” Also know that your largess supports a worthy cause by allowing our nursing home residents to continue to be lovingly cared for when they’ve outlived their finances.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – January 28, 2015

We are pleased to announce our next Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas. On January 28, 2015, we are excited to present Eric and Kelley DeFade with pianist Rich Gallagher as our visiting artists. The DeFade name has been recognized in the jazz musical circles of Pittsburgh for many decades. Eric has appeared as a jazz saxophonists on several Grammy winning CDs and his musical bio reads like a “who’s who” listing with dozens of great musicians. Kelley joins this great musical family bringing a lilting vocie to blend with and add to Eric’s marvelous musical talents. Rick Gallagher brings a rich and lyrical sound to the trio and a solid background and history of jazz presentation locally and nationally.

The previous Jazz Cabarets have been very successful and we expect to continue to grow this musical and charitable endeavor. We are doing this because we want to promote jazz and increase the jazz audience in the region – AND support the “Free Care Fund” for the patients of St. Barnabas who have outlived their finances.

REMINDER: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 5, 2014

Just a “heads up” for the upcoming Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas which will be held next Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Washington Place – the Mt. Vernon Room – 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, PA 15044.

We are very excited to present the Dane Vannatter Trio. Accompanying Dane is the masterful pianist, Max Leake, and the rhythmical and graceful stylings of bassist, Tony DePaolis. Together, these musicians create an ambiance comparable to any jazz club today or in the past.

The starting time is 7:00 p.m. but we would suggest an early arrival to be assured a good seat. The parking is free along with free snacks. There is a cash bar with very nimble bartenders.

You can experience this delightful evening of music and conviviality for only $12.50 /person – AND – as always, you will be contributing to the Free Care Fund which provides for patients at the St. Barnabas Nursing Homes who can no longer afford their care.

Please join us for a lovely evening of melodic music with Dane Vannatter, Pittsburgh’s newest singing sensation, and know you are supporting a worthy cause by helping the less fortunate.
