Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – August 10, 2016

Good afternoon Jazz Cabaret friends,

Come spend a warm summer evening with us in the air-conditioned comfort of the Mt. Vernon Room for our quarterly Jazz Cabaret. Pittsburgh has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great singers and musicians. August 10, 2016 is no exception. The lovely Lisa Marinacci brings her lilting voice to our stage with her interpretations of songs from The Great American Songbook. She and her trio promise a “cheerful little earful” of music that will please the most discerning listener.

Please remember this is a benefit and all monies made on ticket sales go to the Free Care Fund at St. Barnabas.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – August 10, 2016

Good afternoon Jazz Cabaret friends,

We are excited to announce the beginning of our third season of the quarterly Jazz Cabaret at the Mt. Vernon Room at the St. Barnabas Health System.

On August 10, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., I will be introducing Lisa Marinacci and her trio. She is an extraordinary lady with a marvelous array of talents – singer, actor, writer, composer, and producer.

She began her professional career at age 5 in the Civic Light Opera, appearing with Maureen McGovern. This was only the beginning. She went on to receive many awards, appear in shows in Pittsburgh, New York, Las Vegas, and Hollywood. She used all her talents in these various locations. At one point she returned to Pittsburgh to record her first CD with her friend and mentor, Joe Negri.

Lisa has returned to Pittsburgh with her husband and young son. This will be her official debut since coming back to Pittsburgh. She will be accompanied by Joseph Stamerra on keyboard, Pierce Cook on bass, and Tom Early on drums.

Please help us welcome Lisa Marinacci back home and start our new season of the Jazz Cabaret.

Remember this is a benefit and all monies made on ticket sales go to the Free Care Fund at St. Barnabas.

Thank you for supporting jazz and our Free Care Fund.

Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – May 11, 2016

Good afternoon Jazz Cabaret friends,

We are getting good “feed back” from our previous attendees for the May 11, 2016 performance featuring the music of Cole Porter. Dane Vannatter will present the Porter songs in a style reminiscent of the vocalists who have recorded the Porter songs, i.e. Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Merman, etc. Dane’s singing and his accompanists – Daniel May, Tony DePaolis, and James Moore – will satisfy the most discerning listeners who know the Cole Porter songs.

As mentioned, there is much interest being shown, so we suggest arriving early for the 7:00 p.m. performance.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – May 11, 2016

Good afternoon Jazz Cabaret friends,

We have completed our plans for our next Jazz Cabaret – Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Mt. Vernon Room – Washington Place of the St. Barnabas Health System. This will be another theme evening of music. We are featuring the delightful songs of Cole Porter. Cole Porter wrote over 1,000 songs and many have become jazz standards and commercial successes. Dane Vannatter will present the songs in his great interpretive style that will bring out the Porter lyrical and sophisticated melodies as Cole Porter would have wanted.

Dane will be accompanied by Daniel May on piano, Tony DePaolis on bass, and James Moore on trumpet. This celebrated group of musicians will elevate the evening of music to great heights of entertainment.

Dane has a new CD –“Give Me Something Real” – that has received rave reviews in “Talking Broadway” by Rob Lester and In “Cabaret Scenes” by John Hoglund. The CD is being played on jazz stations throughout the country.

This May presentation will wrap up our second year of Jazz Cabarets. It is our hope to continue these productions. That, of course, depends on your continued support as well as that of our sponsors. We hope you will help us keep jazz “alive and well” in the community just as it was in my younger years – sans the smoke! In addition to your attendance and purchase of tickets, if you would like to become a sponsor, that would be a great help in keeping our endeavor viable.

Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – February 3, 2016

Another evening of Music and Conviviality

We have prepared an evening of warm and lovely music to soothe and warm the hearts (and toes) of those of you wintering in Pittsburgh.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by Ms Jessica Lee and her trio – Mark Strickland on guitar and Chris Hemingway on saxophone. They will continue our efforts to present jazz as it was in the 40’s and 50’s – a retro jazz venue featuring songs from the Great American Songbook, songs that have memorable lyrics and melodies that are sophisticated, enjoyable, and romantic.

Please join us for an evening of entertainment promoting jazz and, while doing that, know that you are also supporting the “Free Care Fund” for the financially stressed patients in the St. Barnabas Nursing Homes.

To date, our Jazz Cabaret has been made possible by some volunteers and the help of very generous sponsors. It is our hope that this generosity continues but we can always use more sponsorship and publicity.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – February 3, 2016

Good afternoon to all you jazz fans – those who have supported our Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – and to those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to attend our presentations and enjoy the venue and the music.

We produce a quarterly jazz show in the Mt. Vernon Room at Washington Place. Our sponsors provide the financial support to allow us to schedule some of the local musicians in the Pittsburgh area. They also help us provide tasty hors d’oeuvres in a setting reminiscent of the Pittsburgh jazz clubs of the 50’s and 60’s.

We have a charge of $12.50 per person and all of that money goes to the “free care fund” for needy patients in the St. Barnabas nursing homes. Our jazz efforts and many other efforts allow St. Barnabas to provide over 6 million dollars of free care every year! Your philanthropy and your support of jazz are very much appreciated.

The next Jazz Cabaret is scheduled for February 3, 2016. This will be a blockbuster presentation to start the new year. The Jessica Lee Trio will present songs from the “Great American Song Book”. Jessica is a delightful and talented lady who sings as beautifully as she looks. And, she is truly a renaissance woman – composer, producer, and a graduate of Duke University Law School. She will be accompanied by Mark Strickland on guitar and Chris Hemingway on saxophone – both of whom have musical reumes that are nonpareil.

Please come and join us. Bring friends, and enjoy the conviviality and ambiance of a musical relaxing evening of great jazz.

Reminder: Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 11, 2015

Good afternoon friends of the St. Barnabas Jazz Cabaret,

You do not have to “hurry – hurry – hurry to catch the A train”. Just get on to Route 8 or 910 and then go to 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, PA 15044. There, perhaps, you will catch a “Satin Doll” or just “Day Dream” as we celebrate Billy Strayhorn’s 100th birthday anniversary. His beautiful music will be presented by Tania Grubbs, with her husband, Jeff, on bass, Daniel May on keyboard, and Tom Wendt on drums – all musicians extraordinaire.

Please join us for an evening of exceptional music written by one of Pittsburgh’s own and performed by exceptional Pittsburgh musicians.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – November 11, 2015

Good afternoon friends of the St. Barnabas Jazz Cabaret,

We have enjoyed success with our St. Barnabas quarterly jazz shows. We are hoping to “grow” the project even more. We will be doing more themed shows and hopefully attract an even larger audience.

We will initiate this effort with a November 11, 2015 program that will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Billy Strayhorn. We will dedicate the entire program to the music of the Billy Strayhorn-Duke Ellington collaboration with great emphasis on Billy’s contributions.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas - November 11, 2015The artists performing this will be Tania Grubbs and her trio. Tania performs in and promotes and coordinates many jazz productions, including those at Andy’s Wine Bar at the Fairmont Hotel, The Mansions on 5th Avenue, and other musical endeavors. This should be an outstanding evening as Tania had worked with the Strayhorn family celebrating Billy’s life and music on other occasions.

As we have said in the past, it is our intent to present jazz as it was in the 40’s and 50’s in jazz clubs in Pittsburgh and throughout the country. In other words, a retro jazz venue with musical artists presenting songs from the Great American Songbook – songs that have a memorable set of lyrics and a melody that was sophisticated, enjoyable, and perhaps romantic We hope to preserve this genre of music and make it accessible to the public.

Through our association with St. Barnabas Health System, we can accomplish the above as well as provide for the financially stressed in our nursing homes. At St. Barnabas we continue to keep these patients and provide them with the same love, care, and safety as all of our patients through the Free Care Fund. This is NOT government funded but funded by individuals, organizations, and programs such as our Jazz Cabaret that contribute to the Free Care Fund.

To date, the Jazz Cabaret has been made possible by some volunteers and the help of very generous sponsors. It is our hope that this generosity continues but we can always use more sponsorship and publicity!

We hope that you will assist us with our endeavors. Please join us in keeping jazz alive while at the same time helping the less fortunate in our nursing homes.

Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas – July 29, 2015

Hi dear friends of Jazz and those of good will who support the care and well being of the financially stressed at the St. Barnabas Nursing Homes. We are ready to start a new year of quarterly Jazz Cabarets in the Mt. Vernon Room on July 29, 2015.

We had a very successful first year with great jazz artists and were able to contribute four thousand dollars to the “Free Care Fund”.

The new season starts with Maura Minteer and her trio – Jeff Lashway on keyboard, Tony DePaolis on bass, and David Glover on drums. Maura has an extensive background in music, theatre, and television. She is drawn to the songs of the Great American Songbook – popular songs and jazz standards from the 20th century, once performed by Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and Blossom Dearie, among others. Her trio have all appeared in local, regional, and national venues. Jeff and Tony appeared at our Jazz Cabarets last season.

Please join us for a summer evening of live jazz as it was presented in jazz clubs in my generation – cool sounds in a candlelit setting.

When: Wednesday, July 29, 2015
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Place: Mt. Vernon Room (Kean Theatre annex),
Washington Place, 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia, 15044

For more information and/or reservations, please contact us at 412-366-1035 or via our website Contact Form.
We presently have several sponsors who will provide our start-up expenses. However if anyone wishes to join us in this philanthropic endeavor, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,
Brooks and Helen Bartlett

“GREAT MUSIC – WORTHY CAUSE” – April 22, 2015

“Up Jumps Spring” – a jazz song that Freddie Hubbard wrote seems like a good intro for our April 22, 2015 Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas. We are excited about the marvelous musical artists who will be performing. Chris Laitta, Paul Thompson, and Jeff Lashway present the very best interpretation of songs in the jazz genre. The music is presented in the milieu of a retro jazz club of the 40’s-50’s.

Come and enjoy an evening of jazz and conviviality – AND support the “Free Care Fund” at St. Barnabas.
